Dear Parent/Guardian,
Your 8th grader is currently enrolled in Spanish I. Please note, this is a high school level course and your student has the potential to earn a high school credit. However, he or she must be prepared to earn this credit by participating in the rigors of a typical high school level course. Your student should expect to bring home assignments at least 3-4 days per week and dedicate an additional 15-20 minutes daily for review. Test preparation should begin at least one week prior to assessments. Flashcards and proper use of the study guides are essential study tools for foreign language. Acquisition and comprehension of a new language can be frustrating and challenging at times, so it is critical that students ask questions and not allow themselves to fall behind. Please work with your student and encourage him or her to use their new knowledge of the Spanish language as frequently as possible. Just like with a sport or an instrument, practice makes perfect!
Throughout the duration of the course your student will be learning the fundamentals of the Spanish language including grammar, vocabulary, and culture. Please review the following expectations with your student and sign and return the attached portion by the specified due date.
Required Supplies
Students are required to have a 1.5 or 2 inch binder, dividers, an ample supply of index cards, red pens, a supply of lined paper. A Spanish dictionary is suggested, but not required.
Grading Policy
Grades will be determined by the WCS designated grading policy.
Factors contributing each student’s grade include homework, tests, quizzes, and projects. All tests and quizzes will be preceded by a study guide and a detailed rubric will accompany each project. Students’ binders are to be used as a portfolio and students will be required to keep each and every assignment/handout in chronological order. These will act as a study resource in addition to the assigned textbook.
Attendance
Please familiarize yourself with the school attendance and tardy policy. It will be strictly enforced throughout the school year. However, attendance is particularly important in foreign language classes. In-class work and discussion are pertinent to the language acquisition process.
Late Work
Should a student be absent he/she is responsible for picking up any work that was missed and then meeting with me to set up a reasonable due date. Should a student miss a test or quiz he/she must follow the same rule. Please note that if a student is absent for three days, he/she will have no longer than three days to make up any assignments or assessments. Because plenty of notice is always provided for projects, they must be turned in immediately upon the students return to school. With the exception of excused absences, late work will not be accepted.
